Wish You Were Here

This small collage (4x6) was on display as part of the National Collage Society's annual Post Card Show. I usually do not work this small, but the postcard show entries are alway 4x6.

I wondered if this small piece could be considered an ATC or "Artists Trading Card" but it's actually too big! ATCs are 2.5 x 3.5 inches. This piece would look nice mounted on mat board and framed, or simply leaning up in a plate holder on the counter.

Many thanks to my friend Deb Trzcinski for not only purchasing this small bird collage, but also for providing some of the paper that is actually being used in it! Deb spent some time in Italy and was kind enough to send me some very special papers from her collection. I hope she will enjoy this for many years to come.

Juxtapose Gallery on You Tube

Here is a video on the gallery that represents me in Westfield New Jersey, see my art as the second artist they mention. Thought you might like to take a peek!

Isn't it amazing what technology can offer? Juxtapose seems small, but Gerri sells more of my work than any other gallery. Thanks for including me Gerri!

Show Opening This Weekend

Rip Curl Show
Opening is Friday July 17

Anyone who lives near Melbourne, FL might want to meander over to the LoPressionism Gallery to check out some small Paper Paintings (many at 12x12). This is a nine-week show I have with Jim Hannan in historic downtown Melbourne.

I will not be at the opening myself, as I am traveling to Massachusetts to attend my sister's wedding. However, I will be back at the gallery to give a talk and a quick demo in August for the gallery's "You Call That Art?" series.

Abstraction from Photos

Bamboozled

My friend and fellow artist Jo Reimer posted a comment on my bamboo Paper Painting, she talked about working from photos but only using them as a reference point and then going off on your own.

This process of capturing the essence of an image from the photo is something I have not talked about on the blog, and it brings up a good point. I use the original image to sketch and under-paint from, but often times when it comes to adding the paper, I go off on a different direction. Color, is what usually causes me to stray. I love color, and when I do my collage work, I enhance and embellish the color that I see before me in the photo, I pump up the color intensity and the texture, and I always feel that the collage I end up with is much more visually exciting that the photo I began with! (no offense to my husband and his photography skills here!)

Another way that I interpret the photo is with cropping, you can see that my art is a tighter crop on the upper left hand corner of this photo. I always define a main point of focus in my collages, I need a simplified composition in order for collage to really sing. In this case, it was just a matter of limiting the number of bamboo stalks and separating them from the background. I achieved this separation by leaving mostly under-painting, offering a textural separation.

Small Space Bamboo

Bamboo Garden
16x12, collage of hand painted paper with acrylic, on panel

Did you know that some bamboo grows 12 inches per DAY? that is crazy, you could watch it grow!

This bamboo photo was taken by my husband at Leu Gardens in Orlando. We spent a day there some months ago and he took many beautiful botanical photos that I hope to use for future collage reference. I enjoy painting nature because I can work in more color than anyone could imagine, and it all seems to make sense. And I love color!

My next botanical I have on the easel is a pineapple that I based on a photo my 9-year old son shot on our Hawai'i trip. He worked so hard to get me just the right image! Stay tuned for images of that one.

Small Studio

My Setup at The Beach House

Most of the photos I put on this blog are from my iPhone, it's so easy to shoot them and email them to myself and then post them from my computer. This photo my husband was nice enough to shoot with his professional camera, downsize it for web, and email to me. He did it just for me to share on my blog.

I have managed to produce three small pieces this week from my small space studio. I have not dedicated much more time to painting than I do at home. My friend Jo Reimer made the comment that my pre-planning with the under-paintings and knowing what I was going to work on before I came to the beach, made all the difference. I have to agree.

today is our last day at the beach. I am working on a pineapple which I am basing off a photo that my 9-year old son took on our trip to Hawai'i. He worked very hard to get a really good photo for me to use as a reference.

Stay tuned to see how it comes out!

Small Art in Small Spaces

Bird on a Wire
12x12, collage on panel

I started this collage this morning at the beach house in Outer Banks, North Carolina. I had to put it in the sink so that my spattering and dripping paint would not make the mess that I am free to make in my home studio. Working here, I have brought a stick easel and I have it set up in the living room. For the initial paint stages however, I worked on the kitchen counter and in the sink.

I have worked on this piece in multiple sittings today, and hope to have it finished tomorrow. The under-painting looks really nice, so I am going to try to leave a good portion of it showing through in the finished piece, along with some of the pencil lines.
