Student Work

©Carla from Asheville, NC Workshop - bathing suits on the line

©Carol from Kentucky, DVD student

It's been a while since I posted some student work! First, Carla worked so hard on this bathing suit piece and her apple exercise from class, and then she gave each one to each of her daughters. What a great gift of love! I think she had great success with the water, very thin horizontal pieces make the water in the distance appear far away, larger flowing pieces in the front give us a feeling of close up.

Carol had purchased my DVD and just yesterday purchased my PDF book download here on the blog (right hand column) She said she was very excited about trying her hand at collage. I love the loose quality of this bird, very feathery feeling to me!

Great work by two great students. If you have purchased the DVD or PDF book download and would like to share your work, email me.

Student Work

©Leslie Kruzicki 2010

Leslie took my workshop in Jacksonville, FL. The turtle piece was her class project. She used a lot of magazine papers on it and I think it came out great. I love the way she nestled the stamps in the background underneath the turtle. The color balance really helps to bring the coral and underwater plants forward and the turtle to the background. The long horizontal strips of blue really give a feel for the water. Great job!

The second image is also from Leslie, a collaborative piece that started with the painting of the people by her teacher, then she took it and added the paper! She encouraged me to give this as an example of the difference between copying, emulating, etc. and simply using a technique to go your own way.

Sanford Seminole Collage Workshop

Student Works Completed
box with a bow, Patricia Nelson

This piece was particularly difficult due to the values and shiny qualities in the bow, especially. Tricia did a great job simplifying the shapes and using texture in the bow to make it work for collage. She also added a cord to the edges of the bow when she was finished papering, and this really gives it a flowing effect of ribbon. That's resourceful! I love the definitive values in this piece as well, she has her darks, in the blue on the right, her lights in the green on the left in the green and the purple, and her mediums in the bow and box. It's important to establish and simplify values in figurative collage, so that each section stands out.

Student Works Completed!
pink flamingo, Gail Collins

It's always exciting to see these pieces started in workshops come to completion. Here you can see Gail applying magazine papers to her under painting, which she did on a small canvas. Gail wanted to incorporate patterns and textures of color and ended up using a lot of materials with reference to breast cancer, which she found in her search for pink.  Her variation of blues, lights and darks, in the sky is working very well, her use of smaller, darker pieces toward the bottom and larger "cloud like" pieces at the top, is really working. I am also proud of Gail's "directional ripping" of the paper, she is following the form of the flamingo, for a more dimensional effect. Way to go Gail!
