Register Early for Discounted Tuition

Amelia Island Fall Artists Workshop
I have been invited back to Amelia Island to teach again this year! October 8-10. This workshop is wonderful because it is a three-day class which includes hand painting collage paper techniques all day Friday. The success of any Paper Painting is really in the papers you have to work with.

We will be using fluid acrylics to do hand-tinting and staining art store papers, personal memorabilia, maps and old book pages, along with rice paper and anything else that stirs your creativity. I like to use postage stamps and sheet music, you may have other things you want to put in the mix as well.

Homework for you before you attend the workshop is to do two under-paintings. The first is for the apple exercise which you will use a photo reference (bring this!) to paint a simple, large apple on a 12x12 thin plywood board or American Easel Wood Painting Panel primed with either Liquitex Clear Gesso (tooth) or Golden GAC-100 (no tooth). The second panel should be about 16x20 and can be any image of your choice for your main collage project.

The workshop will be held at the Amelia Hotel at the Beach, they can be reached at 904-261-5735. Tell them that you are with the workshop and / or ask for Elizabeth, she is the contact person for a room rate discount of $89/night.

Don't miss this comprehensive workshop in such a quaint location! You might like to bring family members and make a mini vacation of it.

Register HERE
if you register before September 8, you will receive a $25 discount!

Student Work

©Carla from Asheville, NC Workshop - bathing suits on the line

©Carol from Kentucky, DVD student

It's been a while since I posted some student work! First, Carla worked so hard on this bathing suit piece and her apple exercise from class, and then she gave each one to each of her daughters. What a great gift of love! I think she had great success with the water, very thin horizontal pieces make the water in the distance appear far away, larger flowing pieces in the front give us a feeling of close up.

Carol had purchased my DVD and just yesterday purchased my PDF book download here on the blog (right hand column) She said she was very excited about trying her hand at collage. I love the loose quality of this bird, very feathery feeling to me!

Great work by two great students. If you have purchased the DVD or PDF book download and would like to share your work, email me.

August Altamonte Workshop

Thanks to fun and talented student, Joyce Shelton, I have a good photo of me teaching and  her blog post to link to about my most recent workshop!

Joyce took the class with her good friend and kids book illustrator Loreen Leedy who also blogged about her experience in preparing for my mini-class in Altamonte.

I thank both of these women for offering me some great TESTIMONIALS! Something I was lacking a link to before.

In the second photo, the group is hard at work with paper everywhere!
A good time was had by all.

Asheville Workshop Photos

The Asheville Workshop and featured artist exhibition at the Grand Bohemian Gallery, in the Grand Bohemian Hotel was a big success last weekend. What a great group of people we had for two full days of Paper Painting. Everyone enjoyed the process and the atmosphere within the gallery was inspirational.

We enjoyed lunch both days at the Red Stag Grill which offered an amazing array of fantastic food! Chef Adam really knows his stuff! The Kessler Calamari was my favorite.

I was tickled to have a room key with my artwork on it! The general manager John Luckett could not have been more accommodating, as was his amazing staff. Constance in the gallery is a joy to work with. If you find yourself in Asheville, NC anytime soon, stop in and say hello!

Amelia Island Collage Workshop

Day Two

First, we hand-painted papers for the collage. The group had great fun painting, splattering, stamping and mono printing all different kinds of art paper, textured paper, book pages, maps and personal ephemera. Then, I gave a demonstration of just how we would apply those wonderful collage papers over an under-painting on wood panel.

We got to know each other even better by having lunch together at the restaurant in the courtyard behind Sandra's Amelia SanJon Gallery. We had lunch together as a group each of the three days of the workshop. Sandra's partner in the Amelia Island Artists Workshops is Mikolean Longacre who helped organize lunch every day. I really felt that the lunches were a great way for us to socialize with one another, and it took the guesswork out of finding good restaurants on the island!

Amelia Island Collage Workshop

Day One

We had a great time on Amelia Island this past weekend dedicating our time to learning collage. The Amelia Island Artists Workshop Inc were wonderful hosts! And if you have never been to Amelia Island and historic Fernandina Beach you are missing a hidden gem in Florida.

Shown here is Center Street at the center of downtown, and the front of the Amelia SanJon Gallery, which is home of the Workshops and will be home to a featured show of my artwork now through January. The whole gang (almost) posed for a class photo.

Sandra Baker-Hinton, one of the partners of the Workshops is also a volunteer Turtle Patrol and she invited us all down to the beach on Friday night to experience the excavation of a nest, in hopes that there might still be some live babies in there who could use a helping hand. Unfortunately we did not come across any live turtles, but we did get to see all the hatched out egg shells and one little guy who did not make it.
