Four Underpaintings

24 x 20 | collage on wood panel
A week or so ago I posted about four underpaintings here are two more in the series of completed collages. These are iPhone photos, I'll have better pics in a few days, but wanted to share. In contrast to the very busy blue sky behind the goat, I experimented with leaving a painted, more subdued sky behind the cow. I don't mind the busy blue sky, just looking for some variety. Cow is purple and white rather than black, with blue shadows. I like it. Goat is funny, great expression and very thick hand made paper nose that stands up off the page.

  1. I watched your DVD and am trying to absorb all the information. Love your work! If I can ever get started, I have lots of my photos to use as a starting point. I can't draw (really!) so need to use the photos.

  4. Don't worry about not being able to draw! pick a simple subject and use your photo reference. be sure to keep track of the values, what is light, dark, medium, separate all three all the time and you will have success!

  5. Love both the cow and the goat, especially the purple in the cow. As a weaver, I love Angora goats-- they're the ones we get mohair from. Would that type of goat make a boring picture? They're usually cute, not funny.

  6. cute goats are good too, I think I project the funny feeling on goats. remember them from petting zoos as a child and having them try to eat paper, shoe laces, and anything we had loose, I just remember finding them very funny. That and the square pupils! I will look up angora goats!
